App-only / Note
Scaling consumer businesses creates a tension. Standardize too little and operations become chaotic. Standardize too much and the brand becomes generic. The real skill is knowing which parts customers care about.

App-only note
Standard recipes.
Standard equipment.
Standard store layouts.
Standard SOPs.
Standard training.
All necessary.
But great consumer businesses cannot standardize everything.
Because some inconsistency is operational waste.
And some variation is where the brand’s humanity lives.
Customers rarely care which ERP you use.
Or which warehouse process.
Or how purchase orders are generated.
inventory system,
reporting structure,
back-office process,
equipment specification,
training framework,
procurement workflow.
These should be as standardized as possible.
Standardisation here reduces cost and mistakes without reducing the experience.
product quality,
hospitality,
atmosphere,
taste,
merchandising,
local relevance,
how staff make them feel.
Over-standardising these areas can strip the business of character.
The challenge is to standardize the quality bar without making every interaction robotic.
This distinction matters.
A drink should taste the same.
A staff member does not need to speak from a script.
A store should feel recognisable.
It does not need to feel identical.
A service promise should be consistent.
The human interaction around it can remain natural.
Great operations are not about making everything the same.
They are about knowing exactly what needs to be the same.
Standardize what customers do not care about.
Protect what they do.
That balance is one of the hardest parts of scaling a consumer brand.
And probably one of the biggest differences between building a chain and building a brand.
